Software Engineer (Cloud)

Want to launch a couple hundred servers in 10 minutes?

RightBrain Networks--a cloud computing consulting and software engineering firm--is seeking an experienced Software Engineer based out of our Ann Arbor, Michigan office.  You'll gain real, hands-on experience working with some the most in-demand technologies: "Big Data", natural language processing, cloud computing, DevOps, and more.

Our technical team specializes in building, consulting on, and managing complex, highly-scalable Internet-based applications.  We are an Amazon Web Services (AWS) Advanced Consulting Partner and one of only six certified AWS managed services providers in the world.   You'll find our code in military, commercial aviation, and financial market applications currently used by millions of people each day.  Our clients are located all over the world and rely on us to build applications that can scale with their businesses.

In this role you would be working with a small team to build "cloud native" applications.  We write code in variety of languages, depending on the project needs, but most commonly: Python, Java, and Go. All of our applications are built around modern design principles such as loosely-coupled components, distributed processing, and highly-scalable cloud infrastructure.  We also also strong adherents to DevOps workflows such as: continuous integration and automated deployments (we also consult with clients on how to adopt these practices). There will be an intense amount of on-the-job learning and you'll be prepared to pass the "AWS Certified Developer" exam within six months of hire. This role reports directly to the Practice Director, Software Engineering.

Why would you want to work here?

  • Strong engineering culture--management is all engineers, not MBAs.
  • #7 small business on the Crain's "Coolest Places to Work in Michigan" list in 2014.
  • Flexible time-off, excellent health insurance, 401k with employer match, and other great benefits.
  • Very unique working environment; you'll always be technically challenged and never bored.

  • 2-4 years experience as a programmer or software engineer.
  • Four year CS degree or equivalent.
  • Ability to get things done in more than one programming language.  Languages we commonly work with include: Python, JavaScript (and Node,js), Java, Ruby, Go, .NET, PHP, Perl.
  • Experience developing specifically for the web (RESTful APIs, frontend JS frameworks, MVC frameworks, distributed application architecture, performance tuning/profiling, database design and performance).
  • Accustomed to working in a collaborative environment using Agile methodologies, unit testing, source control, and continuous integration.

  • Experience building applications on a highly-scalable web architecture (preferably via Amazon Web Services).
  • Experience gathering requirements, estimating projects, and direct client communication.

This is a full-time, salaried position with benefits.
